Admission into the Chemical Engineering Program YSU is an open admission state university and requires a high school diploma or GED. Traditional Ohio students are required to take the ACT or SAT, whereas out-of-state students must also rank in the upper two-thirds of their graduating class, or have minimum ACT score of 17, or SAT score of 820. International students must take the TOEFL or MELAB examinations and have a minimum score of 500 (paper), 173 (computer), and 80, respectively. All students must take the Composition and Reading Placement Test and the Math Placement Test upon acceptance into the university. Students must be placed into Calculus 1 (MATH 1571) or achieve a minimum ACT math score of 23, or a minimum SAT math of score of 530 to gain admission into the First-Year Engineering Program. Those students who do not meet these criteria may enter the Pre-Engineering and Technology Program and then transfer into the First-Year Program after qualifying to enroll in Calculus 1 and English 1550 (Writing 1) and have a grade point average of at least 2.30. Professional staff within the College of Engineering advises the Pre-Engineering and the First-Year Engineering students. These advisors use the results of math and English placement tests, high school records and transcripts from previous institutions to make recommendations on course selection. They also provide valuable orientation and career counseling services to students, including familiarization with University resources and procedures, and assistance in selecting a major. Students must have a grade of "C" or better in Calculus 1 (MATH 1571), General Chemistry 1 (CHEM 1515/1515L), Writing 1 (ENGL 1550), and a GPA of at least 2.3 (4.0 basis) to gain admission into the Chemical Engineering Program. Transfer students are evaluated consistent with these policies on an individual basis. Transfer StudentsPlease consult the Youngstown State University Undergraduate bulletin for general information regarding transfer to the University. To transfer credit from courses within the professional component taken at an institution other than Youngstown State University, course catalogues are consulted by the Chemical Engineering Program Coordinator to ensure that the rigor of calculus, differential equations, physics, and chemistry equals or surpasses that at YSU. Engineering courses are transferred only when the course descriptions and semester hours correspond to those at YSU. In no cases are ABET/AIChE requirements waived and thus all minimum engineering science, advanced chemistry, and general math and science semester hours are upheld. Only engineering courses taken at ABET/EAC accredited institutions are accepted.
