 First time college students from high school, who are seeking a Bachelor of Engineering degree, are admitted to either First-Year Engineering (FYE) or the Pre-Engineering & Technology Programs. For admission to the FYE program a student must have an ACT math score of 23 or higher (or SAT math score of 530 or better). However, an admission into the FYE major will be granted for the student who places into MATH 1571, Calculus I, on the YSU Math Placement Test, regardless of his/her ACT math score. Students who do not meet these criteria are admitted to the Pre-Engineering and Technology Program, where they remain until they are qualified to take Math 1571, Calculus I and English 1550, Composition I and, at that point, transfer to FYE.
The FYE program is coordinated by the First Year Engineering Coordinator with the support of a full-time Administrative Assistant and an Academic Advisor. The students are advised by the FYE staff that guides them to take the required prerequisite courses and maintain academic performance levels specified in accordance with the policies of the College of Engineering and Technology.
Admission to the Mechanical Engineering Program is granted to the students who have successfully completed the requirement for transferring to a degree-granting engineering major in the FYE Program. A student must have earned a minimum of 16 semester hours, and have earned “C” or better grades in MATH 1571, Calculus 1, CHEM 1515/1515L, General Chemistry 1, and ENGL 1550, Composition 1, and have a GPA greater than or equal to 2.3. The intra-University transfer to the Mechanical Engineering Program requested by an eligible student results in the transfer of all advisement records from the FYE offices to the offices of the Mechanical Engineering Program
